In this blog post, we will share the details of this project and highlight the importance of the correct and compliant decommissioning of underground fuel storage tanks.

The Bayswater Airport Rail Link Project

The Bayswater Airport Rail Link is an important infrastructure development aimed at improving transportation connectivity in Perth. As part of the project, Handy Fuel WA was entrusted with the task of decommissioning a redundant 5000-litre fuel tank that was randomly discovered during routine earthworks on site. This fuel storage tank, having served its purpose many years previously, needed to be safely emptied and removed to make way for further construction development.

Safe Decommissioning within Code of Practice

Handy Fuel WA understands the criticality of adhering to all associated Australian Standards & Environmental Regulations when it comes to fuel tank decommissioning. Our team meticulously planned and executed the decommissioning process, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations. We took into account factors such as tank location, accessibility, and environmental considerations to devise a safe and efficient extraction strategy.

Responsible Removal of Controlled Waste

During the decommissioning process, our team prioritised environmental stewardship and the responsible disposal of any controlled waste. We followed environmental protocols to prevent any contamination or adverse effects on the surrounding area and also conducted soil sampling & analysis of the excavation pit. Our experienced professionals expertly handled the fuel tank and all associated Controlled Waste materials, ensuring their safe transportation and disposal at licensed waste management facilities and producing Waste Tracking Certification upon compliant disposal.
